Background of the Study:
Digital migration, characterized by the shift from analog to digital broadcasting, has significantly reshaped media consumption patterns worldwide. In Asaba Local Government, Delta State, traditional television is undergoing a transformation as viewers increasingly shift towards digital platforms for entertainment and information (Obi, 2023). This transition is driven by the superior quality, interactivity, and on-demand nature of digital media, which offer viewers a more personalized experience. Despite these advantages, traditional television still holds cultural significance, and many viewers in Asaba remain attached to established broadcast formats. The coexistence of digital and traditional media presents both opportunities and challenges. While digital migration promises enhanced access to diverse content, it also raises questions about the sustainability of conventional television broadcasting and its role in shaping public opinion (Chukwu, 2024). This study investigates how digital migration influences traditional television consumption patterns in Asaba, analyzing the implications for media providers and consumers in a rapidly evolving digital era.

Statement of the Problem:
Although digital migration is reshaping media consumption in Asaba, the extent to which it diminishes traditional television viewership is not fully understood. Many consumers continue to value traditional broadcasts for cultural and nostalgic reasons, despite the increasing availability of digital alternatives. This study aims to identify the factors influencing the shift in viewing habits and assess the impact of digital migration on traditional television consumption (Obi, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the influence of digital migration on traditional television consumption in Asaba Local Government.

  2. To identify factors that motivate viewers to switch between digital and traditional media.

  3. To propose strategies for traditional broadcasters to remain competitive in the digital era.

Research Questions:

  1. How does digital migration affect traditional television viewership in Asaba?

  2. What factors influence the choice between digital and traditional media consumption?

  3. How can traditional television adapt to the digital migration trend?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Digital migration significantly reduces traditional television viewership.

  2. Viewer preferences are influenced by content quality and interactivity.

  3. Traditional broadcasters can retain viewership by integrating digital elements.

Significance of the Study:
The study will provide valuable insights for media houses and regulators to develop strategies that balance digital innovation with traditional broadcasting, ensuring sustainable media consumption in Asaba Local Government (Chukwu, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the influence of digital migration on traditional television consumption in Asaba Local Government, Delta State.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Digital Migration: The transition from analog to digital broadcasting systems.

  2. Traditional Television: Conventional broadcast television services.

  3. Media Consumption: The process by which audiences engage with various forms of media content.
